1. Museum of the Great Plains
Familiarize yourself with the natural history of the Great Plains. The Museum of the Great Plains offers interactive exhibits and self-directed activities where visitors are free to investigate the past, present, and the future. Learn all about the area surrounding Fort Sill and its unique and exciting history.
Tickets are available at the museum front desk and can be purchased with cash or card. Children under the age of two years old are admitted for free, while ages 3-12 are $8, ages 13 and older are $10, people 62 years older are $9, and military with valid identification are $9.
2. Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center
If you’re more interested in learning about the history of the native people of these lands, consider visiting the Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center.
Here you can learn about Native American tribes who inhabited the land, the history of the Comanche people, and explore traditional art galleries. Admission is free for all!
3. Oklahoma Military Landmarks
Still looking for more museums to explore? There are plenty of military-specific exhibitions and landmarks to check out near Fort Sill, like the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark as well as the U.S. Army Field Artillery and Air Defense Museum. Here you can learn more about the equipment that was used by the United States Military in the early 1900s by exploring the grounds of a 19th century army post.
4. Wichita Falls, Texas
This beautiful city is only about an hour drive from Fort Sill, OK, and it has a great deal to offer.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful afternoon near the falls in Lucy Park, you’re ready to splash around with the kids at Castaway Cove Waterpark, or you want to catch a hockey game at the Wildcat’s Hockey Stadium, Wichita could make for the perfect day trip. You might even get a chance to see some wild bison, elk, and deer if you visit the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
5. Indian Chief Geronimo’s Grave
While you’ve probably heard the saying, “Geronimo!” you may not know that the famous phrase originates from an Indian Chief who just so happens to be buried in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Known for his strong presence in the negotiations between Native Americans and American settlers in the Western conquest, Geronimo is a famous historical figure whose grave is open to the public for viewing.
6. Medicine Bluff
If you enjoyed Chief Geronimo’s burial grounds, then you might want to head over to another major historical landmark near Fort Sill: Medicine Bluff. This huge, half-domed rock with a grassy top and slated face was sacred to Native Americans as one of the only four porphyry bluffs along the mountainside. It’s recommended to visit this landmark after visiting the Fort Sill Museum where information about this site is offered.
7. The Silver Spoon
Check out some off-base dining at a locally owned restaurant and bakery, the Silver Spoon. It specializes in homemade soups, salads, and pastries, but you don’t want to miss their morning cinnamon buns or bacon-cheddar scones!
8. Braum’s Ice Cream
If you’re looking for something sweet to indulge in after lunch or dinner, then swing by Braum’s Ice Cream Shop on your way home to the base.
This shop is just two miles from Fort Sill and it offers delicious assortment of old fashioned ice cream, light ice cream, frozen yogurts, and other frozen treats.
9. The Kids Zone
Looking for things to do near Fort Sill, OK that your kids will enjoy? The Kids Zone Playground is the perfect place for kids to get active and burn some of their built-up energy. They’ll have a blast playing, making friends, and having adventures in their new home!
10. Elmer Thomas Park Disc Golf
This is another fun outdoor activity for the whole family. The City of Lawton Elmer Thomas Disc Golf course has several different courses to provide plenty of entertainment, challenges levels, and games. With its scattered trees and plenty of space, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon as a family.
