At first glance, pickleball appears to be a mix between ping pong and tennis. And while there’s no ‘love’ in keeping score – as there is in tennis – pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America!

In 1965, 3 dads came together to invent a game to keep their children engaged during summer break. Last week, the SpouseLink team was fortunate enough to be introduced to the sport, getting a lesson from USA Pickleball Association Ambassador Helen White and a few of her talented teammates.

A fun pastime for all ages, pickleball is all about bounce, and less about force on the ball. If you’re looking for something a little lower impact that tennis, and more intense than ping pong, get outside and start up a friendly game of pickleball.

Let the paddle do all the work. The ball will bounce very well off of the paddle…not so much on the court.  That’s where it gets tricky. But don’t worry, as we learned last week, during an afternoon full of some friendly competition with a pickleball expert, you’ll be hooked!

So, you’re probably wondering – what are some of the rules? This is where we’ll hand things off to the real pros to explain how it’s done. If you try out America’s most up-and-coming pastime, let us know what you think!

And if you’re local to Northern Virginia, check it out at the Lee District Recreation Center next Wednesday from 7:00-8:30pm.
