Families OverComing Under Stress- Combat Injured (Focus-CI) is a research study focusing on family resilience with service members, partners and their children. Here are a few commonly asked questions about the study with answers provided by the experts at CIFamilies.
What’s the goal of the study?
The goal is to evaluate the effects of combat injuries on all members of a family. It’s designed to shed light on the recovery of injured individuals and how they and their families may best be helped over time. This is a great opportunity for families to confidentially share successes and challenges service members and families have experienced while adjusting to a combat injury.
Who’s conducting the study?
The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences is conducting the research at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland (and surrounding areas); at San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas (and surrounding areas); and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (and surrounding areas).

What are the benefits of participating?
Benefits of being involved in this study include comprehensive assessment, access to study resources and monetary compensation.
- After the completion of required interviews, each non-military partner and children of eligible ages will receive a Visa gift card.
- Participants will be supported by the study team for a period of 2 years.
- Access to local military and community-based resources and assistance accessing these resources will be available for participants.
