Inviting friends over for… anything… soon? (For Mother’s Day, perhaps?) That’s a good enough reason as any to try this fresh homemade hummus recipe, from Southern Living.

But you don’t need to wait for an excuse to throw a party to test this recipe. It also looks like something you could whip up on a Sunday morning and enjoy as a light snack throughout the week. If you pair it with veggies instead of chips, it may also be a great way to satisfy your appetite without loading up on foods that are not the best for your diet. And even though this recipe is vegetarian friendly, its smoky flavor is sure to satisfy meat eaters, too. They won’t miss anything (unless you don’t give them a bite).

By the way, it’s not mentioned in the video, but it looks like the creators also sprinkled the pita chips with some chunky salt. We are all for that.

Watch for the how-to:

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 16 oz. Black-Eyed Peas
  • 6 Tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 3 Tbsp. Tahini
  • 2 Tbsp. Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp. Smoked Paprika
  • 3/4 tsp. Salt
  • 1/2 tsp. Black Pepper

Finely chop the cloves and peas, blend with other ingredients until smooth. Spoon out onto a serving platter or bowl. Drizzle with more olive oil, smoky paprika and lemon zest. Serve with pita bread, pita chips, veggies (carrot and celery sticks, cucumber slices, etc.) or tortilla chips.

Dig in!
