Senator John Walsh is the first Iraq War veteran to serve in the U.S. senate. He is now introducing legislation to combat the 22 veteran suicides that take place every day.

The democratic senator from Montana is proposing the Suicide Prevention for America’s Veterans Act in association with the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

The bill aims to extend the period for which veterans are able to obtain mental health treatment and to improve the quality of available mental health care providers.

Other topics within the bill include improving the VA prescription process and annual reviews of care programs nationwide.
