Recently the “widow’s tax” has been dominating headlines and conversations throughout the military community. However, while a lot of people are talking about what to do with it, not many people are talking about what the widow’s tax is and how to navigate it. Despite the revived campaign to change or repeal the tax, it is still very much a reality, and it is important for you and your MilFam to know how it could affect you.
Currently, critics of the widow’s tax are claiming that the tax wrongfully punishes survivors of deceased servicemembers by making them forfeit part of the annuity they’ve earned from the Department of Defense. Losing a spouse is an emotionally difficult time that can lead to many many concerns for the future. That stressful and sad time should not be further complicated for the survivors as they jump through legal and financial loopholes.
To help military families navigate the widow’s tax and prepare for life after the death of a loved one, the Member Benefits team at the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association (AAFMAA) are hosting a free webinar that will help you understand everything you need to know about it.
In this webinar, AAFMAA Member Benefits will provide an in-depth explanation of this timely issue so that you may better understand the impact of the law and how it could affect your benefits as a military survivor.
Space is limited for this free webinar, which premieres on June 13, 2019, so register now to reserve your spot in either the 9am or 3pm session.
