ABC News reports on the incredible amount of food the average American household disposes of annually. Research shows that the average American family throws out approximately $190 worth of food each month, or around 25% of food purchased.  This report follows a family of 4 for 1 week in order to document their purchasing habits, consumption habits, and disposal habits.

What’s the solution?

  1. Learn the lingo (There are differences between ‘sell by’ date, ‘use by’ date, ‘best by’ date, and expiration date.)
  2. Plan your portions carefully
  3. If you have leftovers, get creative
  4. Keep the refrigerator set at or below 40 degrees
  5. Zone your refrigerator
