New Google Tools Help MilSpouses Find Work
There’s no denying that Military Spouses are a capable bunch. To put it plainly, they get stuff done. But despite an unquestioned work ethic, Military Spouses aren’t always welcomed with open arms in the workforce.
According to a 2017 report from Hiring Our Heroes, 16 percent of Military Spouses are unemployed. That’s nearly four times greater than the national unemployment rate. And of those that are working, 55 percent are underemployed, employed in roles below their abilities or education levels.
There’s a long, long list of reasons and contributing factors that lead to such a high unemployment rate among the MilSpouse community. Constant PCSing makes it hard to establish careers in one place and, unfortunately, some employers aren’t keen on hiring Military Spouses knowing they might be moving in a year.
But luckily, there are companies out there that recognize the power of MilSpouses and just how important it is to support them in our communities. Google has recently announced a new and improved job search feature that makes it easier for MilSpouses to find quality remote jobs that match their unique skill sets.
But that’s not all. Google is also offering hands-on training courses and exclusive tools and free online training courses for MilSpouses to help them prepare for whatever job they’re after. From guidelines on how to transition to remote work, to classes open workplace collaboration tools and much more, Google is committed to providing top-of-the-line resources for MilSpouses looking to further their careers.
“Knowing the important role military spouses play, we want to continue using technology to address the unique challenges military spouses face as they build their careers,” said Program Manager Mary Spence in a Google Blog. And for those MilSpouses hitting the job search… good luck!
